As everything fell apart around me, I let go of what was comfortable to step into the unknown. I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey that would test my resilience, redefine my passions, and ultimately lead me to discover a deeper purpose.
Back in 2008, life as I knew it took a sudden turn. I had been working as a tool and die maker for over 20 years, a career path I chose for its security. My grandfather was also a tool and die maker, and both he and my parents guided me toward this stable, well-paying blue-collar job. Though it wasn't my passion, it provided a comfortable income and quality of life for our young family. We had just bought a new home when the market crash changed everything.
Suddenly, the sense of stability I had was pulled out from beneath me—the plant where I worked closed down. With a hefty mortgage on our new home, babies, and no job, I had to make a decision. Faced with limited options, I took a leap of faith and invested everything I had into buying a small business called Sturgis Trophy House, which specialized in awards and engravings. I embraced the entrepreneurial path, recognizing that there was no real security in working for someone else; I was taking matters into my own hands.
Those initial years were incredibly tough. We went from a comfortable income to the unpredictable challenges of running a small business. My wife worked at the local police department, which provided some stability and insurance, but starting over was daunting. Despite the difficulties, I threw myself into growing the business. I expanded our services to include signs, screen printing, and embroidery. Slowly but surely, the business stabilized, and we managed to survive those rough years.
As a business owner, I knew the most important thing I could do was give back to the community that supported me and my business. I got very involved, serving as president of the Kiwanis Club, a board member of Sturgis Downtown Development Authority, and on the Chamber of Commerce.
After a decade of running Sturgis Trophy House, an opportunity arose to sell the business. It was another pivotal moment, and I decided to embrace a new challenge—real estate. This career shift was not entirely out of the blue; real estate had always intrigued me, and it felt like a natural progression. I joined a top brokerage in the area and embarked on this new path.
My experience as an entrepreneur translated well into real estate. The business skills and community connections I had developed were invaluable. My involvement with local organizations proved beneficial as I built my real estate career because people already knew and trusted me. I viewed the real estate business through the lens of my previous entrepreneurial experience, and this perspective helped me succeed.
The first year in real estate was a steep learning curve, but I had taken a leap of faith before, and this time, I was more prepared. I made a promise to my wife to not let my career get in the way of my family. I’m proud to have never missed an event or family activity. My wife Amanda and I have two daughters, Brooke and Reese, who are now in college.
What I love most about real estate is the opportunity to help people. My favorite clients are first-time homebuyers, as it’s incredibly rewarding to help them achieve their dream of homeownership. Over the years, I have also expanded into the luxury market, which has strengthened my skills and allowed me to provide that luxury experience for every client!
The challenges in my life have been a blessing in disguise, teaching me invaluable lessons and shaping who I am today. My life is now aligned with my true passions—helping people and giving back to the community. I’ve navigated the ups and downs of life, always striving to make a positive impact on those around me.
From the moment I stepped into the world of real estate, I knew it was where I belonged. My passion lies in helping clients find their perfect home, whether it’s a luxury estate, a first-time purchase, or a unique property like farmland or a waterfront retreat. The most rewarding part of my work is helping people achieve their dreams.
My greatest strength lies in building strong relationships with my clients. I believe that real estate is not just about transactions; it’s about understanding people’s dreams and helping them achieve their goals.
